Environmentally friendly accommodation
These days more and more people are thinking about the environment. It is becoming apparent to most people in the Western World that to enable us and our surroundings to exist in an acceptable way that is sustainable then we must act now.
The concepts of living life in an environmentally friendly way are becoming better understood. It covers all aspects of our lives and our surroundings. At Ivy Bank we do our best to run our lives and our business in a manner that complies with these ideals.
If you would like to stay at a bed and breakfast or guest house that provides a friendly atmosphere then we would like to think that Ivy Bank is the place for you.
Our accommodation can cater for eleven people in five rooms – four rooms and one family room that has a double and a single bed. All the bedrooms are en-suite comfortably furnished and attractively decorated.
To make Ivy Bank as environmentally friendly as possible we have considered the following aspects: lighting, heating, maintenance, supplies, waste, cleaning and transport. In addition we belong to a local organisation funded by the tourism businesses of Cumbria which carries out conservation work in the area. The Tourism and Conservation Partnership helps to maintain footpaths, repair dry stone walls, preserves woodland and meadows and provides support for the protection of endangered local animals such as the red squirrel otter and water vole.
The lighting at Ivy Bank uses a combination of conventional bulbs low energy bulbs photo sensitive cells and P.I.R. In areas where the quality of lighting is most important we use conventional bulbs of a suitable wattage. Where lights need to be on for long periods and for background lighting low energy bulbs are used. For outside lighting covering access to the house lights are controlled by a mix of photocell and motion activation (P.I.R.).
Ivy Bank is kept well maintained to prevent such things as leaky taps and unnecessary loss of heat.
Where possible we source our supplies from companies that have similar environmentally friendly aims. Some are Fair Trade items, some organic and most of our cleaning materials are supplied by Ecover.
Waste is becoming a very important issue in the country with less and less space available for landfill. We try to recycle as much as possible and in doing so are able to keep the volume of material sent to land fill to a minimum. The materials we are able to recycle are paper, glass, metals, cardboard, plastic containers, wood and organic waste. Most goes to the local council recycling facility and the organic waste we compost and use in the garden.
As far as transport is concerned we run only one vehicle, which is a diesel and has a good mile per gallon rating. We try not to use the car for short journeys and walk and cycle instead.
While staying at our accommodation you might like to try leaving the car behind. There are good services to Windermere by train
